Historical milestones

Bhavnagar has a proud history as one of the most progressive princely states of British India — the first to ban child marriages and one of the earliest to introduce railways.
1723
City founded by Bhavsinhji Gohil
Maharaja Bhavsinhji I of the Gohil Rajput dynasty established the city on the Gulf of Khambhat, naming it after himself.
1880s
First narrow-gauge railway in Saurashtra
Under progressive rulers, Bhavnagar became the first state in Kathiawar to build a railway line, driving trade and modernization.

Samaldas Arts College established

Merger with the Republic of India
