Main Attractions at the Swadeshi Mela

Handmade Products from Women and Artisans

The heart of the mela is its stalls run by women from self-help groups and artisans from the city. You can buy handicrafts, home-made snacks and products, clothes, decor pieces and art and craft items directly from the people who make them. Last year’s mela had over 90 stalls set up in long rows across the ground, so there is a lot to explore.

Ayurvedic and Herbal Products

Several stalls bring Ayurvedic and herbal items like natural skin care, hair oils and home remedies. These are made in small batches by women’s groups and make for useful buys for the home.

Diwali Shopping and Gifting

With Diwali around the corner, the mela is a handy place to pick up diyas, torans, rangoli items, festive decor and gift items. Prices are fair, and every purchase goes straight to the family or group behind the product.

Kids Activity Zone

Children have a separate activity zone with table games, stacking games and colourful floor games painted on the ground. Kids can play here while parents shop at the stalls nearby.

Cultural Programs and Competitions

Cultural programs, music and entertainment shows are held at the mela, along with fun competitions open to visitors. Evenings are the liveliest time, with the whole ground lit up and families out together.

Free Plant Saplings

Last year, the BMC garden department set up a nursery stall at the mela and gave away plant saplings free to visitors. It was one of the most popular stops, especially for families looking to add some green to their homes.

What Is the Swadeshi Mela?

Swadeshi means “of our own country”. A Swadeshi Mela is a fair where only Indian-made products are sold, mostly by small makers, home-based businesses and women’s self-help groups. In Bhavnagar, the Swadeshi Mela is organised by the municipal corporation under the Gujarat Urban Livelihood Mission, a government scheme that helps city families build better sources of income.

Why the Swadeshi Mela Is Held

Many women and artisans in the city make good quality products at home but do not have a shop, a brand or a way to reach enough buyers. Big stores and online platforms are hard for them to get into. The Swadeshi Mela solves this by giving them a stall, a large crowd of buyers and a festive season when people are ready to shop, all at one place.

Buying directly from makers also means there is no middleman. The money you spend goes straight to the person who made the product, which helps their family and keeps small businesses in the city running.

Goal of the Swadeshi Mela

The main goal of the Swadeshi Mela is to make women entrepreneurs and artisans financially strong and help them earn a steady income from their skills. It also encourages people to choose Swadeshi products over imported ones, in line with the Vocal for Local campaign and the idea of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat, a self-reliant India.

For many self-help groups, the mela is their biggest selling event of the year. The sales, new customers and contacts they get here often help them grow their small business well after the mela ends. Every visit and every purchase, however small, supports this effort.

Good to Know Before You Go

Afternoons are calmer if you want time to browse and talk to sellers, while evenings are busier and more festive. Drinking water and waste bins are available across the ground. Keep some cash along with UPI, as a few small stalls may prefer one or the other. If you are planning Diwali gifts or decor, visiting in the first week gives you the best choice before popular items sell out.
