History Of Barton Library

The inception of the Barton Library traces back to the roots of the Chhagan Prasad Desai Library, marking the pioneering step towards institutional development in the Kathiawad area.

In response to Bhavnagar’s thirst for knowledge, Diwan Gaurishankar Oza laid the foundation of the “Shri Chhaganbhai Desai Library” in 1860. This modest beginning set the stage for the eventual emergence of the renowned Barton Library, symbolizing a journey from a small drop to the expansive ripples of enlightenment.

How old is Barton Library?

The Barton Library, established on December 30, 1882, is precisely 150 years old. It was inaugurated by King Takhtsinhji Gohil on that date and named after the English political agent Colonel L. C. Barton. Barton Library is closely associated with the Chhagan Prasad library and holds a significant place in Gujarat’s cultural landscape. Academics, researchers, and intellectuals consider it a repository of valuable information.

The library boasts thousands of Gujarati books covering various subjects, making it an indispensable part of the state’s history. Many book enthusiasts in Gujarat aspire for Barton Library to attain national acclaim. Originally housed in the expansive building of Majiraj Kanyashala near the corporation in Navapara, Barton Library counted Mahatma Gandhi among its regular patrons.

However, the dream of revitalizing Barton Library as a renowned institution remains distant. The organization faces significant challenges, particularly in terms of funding. Your contribution is crucial to its revival. Donations to Barton Library are tax-exempt under Section 80G, and the library is authorized to receive international funds under the FCRA Act of 19.
